François Carrier
Happening
Leo Records CD LR 451/452

Quebecois saxophonist François Carrier subscribes to the transcendent, ecstatic vision of jazz first suggested by John Coltrane and championed by the New Thing in the mid-60s. Subsequently this double live CD - around two hours of almost continuous improvised Music - leans much closer towards expansive free jazz than improv. Carrier's regular rhythm section of Côté and Lambert fuels a lot of this, never afraid to fall into a deep groove if the moment calls for it.  The aura of 60s-style experimentation is further heightened by the presence of Uwe Neumann's sitar and other non-Western instruments and, slotting in effortlessly, the microtonal viola of Mat Maneri (son of saxophone pioneer, Joe). It all comes together beautifully at the opening of 'Happening (four),' where the sanza (a kind of thumb piano) sets up an infectious fourth-world barrage that opens the door to an unstoppable modal riff reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders' Black Unity. Seriously deep stuff.
