Open Spaces (Spool)

Tenor sax pioneer Dewey Redman died last month, and the Uxbridge-based label Spool has swiftly released tapes made seven years ago in Quebec City. The late master is teamed with one of Canada's most exciting avant-garde players, alto saxman François Carrier, volcanic drummer Michel Lembert and on bass either Ron Seguin or Michel Donato. The completely improvised sessions grow in passion and inspiration over three lengthy workouts and increasingly they generate examples of players listening hard to and responding to each other, with nods to the torrential under-your-skin grooves that flowed from Ornette Coleman combos. Wonderful wailing and taut tension-filled passages impress. GC
