FRANÇOIS CARRIER / MICHEL LAMBERT - Kathmandu (FMR 236; UK)
Featuring Francois Carrier on alto sax and Michel Lambert on drums. This fine duo disc was recorded at two concerts in Kathmandu in Nepal in October of 2006. Francois Carrier and Michel Lambert are both Montreal-based musicians who have worked together and recorded for labels: Leo, Justin Time, 482 Music and Spool. They've collaborated with American musicians like Paul Bley, Uri Caine and Dewey Redman. This is their first duo recording, made during their journey to the magical place of Nepal. Right from the first note of "White Summit," we know that we are in for something quite special. There is a precious balance and spirit that is evoked in this recording. There is calm vibe at the center of this piece, a quiet blending of the free spirits. You can tell that both of these musicians have been working together for a while since they seem to think along the same path and connect on different levels. On "Dancing Light," the drummer plays a quick, intense, agitated beat while the sax jumps into the void and dances on the quickly shifting rhythmic energy. What I find most memorable about this duo is that they most often deal with these elegant yet free melodies that they caress and develop without having to resort to the usual screaming insanity of "free jazz". Quite a superb offering on all levels. - BLG
